Well, I've finally entered the 21st century and am now a proud owner of an I-phone. It's the older 4s because sprint is damn near giving them away, and, as I've never had a smart phone before, really don't care to spend the extra $$ for the latest and greatest. Are there any apps that I should consider installing? Recommendations would be welcome for this newbie.

YouTube and Google Maps. Apple removed them from the recent versions of iOS.
and it's iPhone , not I-phone. Just wanted to tell you before you write that in a forum/message board full of assholes.

TuneIn for internet radio
YouTube
Sound hound/Shazam for music ID
Chrome for web browsing
Flashlight apps are surprisingly useful though they do hit the battery hard
If you have e books that you like to read , then a reader that works with your collections format

iOS 7 has a built-in flashlight now, so I deleted my old Flashlight app. But yes, I have used that flashlight feature many times, and it's great.
Edit: Not sure if Deal Killer's phone has iOS 7. It might still have iOS 6.

Does it have GPS? If so get something that warns you of speed traps. Also, waze is a relatively decent free navigation app.

Pulse is good. I use it to compile all the blogs I read. Jalopnik and oppo included.

Google Chrome, YouTube, Google Drive or other cloud storage apps like Dropbox, a flashlight app of some sort, Amazon Kindle, Pandora or other internet radio apps, Facebook, Twitter, Flipboard, etc.
You might want to get second opinions from other owners of older iPhones here, but I think you should upgrade to iOS 7 if you haven't already done so.

I like Gas Cubby for keeping track of mileage and maintenance costs on my cars. It is easy to use and can support multiple vehicles if you need that. I prefer Gas Guru for checking gas prices.
Photosynth is a pretty cool panoramic photo app. It stitches together a bunch of individual pics automatically for you, and in the app you can rotate the camera around for a POV effect.

In no particular order:
Yelp - find stuff like restaurants, various stores, etc
Banking and insurance - can be handy.
1Password - costs money but it's helpful
Instapaper - good for saving stuff to read later.
Mailbox - pretty way of getting Gmail.
VSCO Cam for photo taking.
Dropbox!
Craigslist for car and parts shopping on the go, haha.
Skype is useful if you use it.
